In an alternative history where the twentieth century gave rise to individuals with psychic talents, the Great War is the last war fought before the Gulf Wars break out. Battles in the inhospitable desert of Iraq see are fought with antiquated tactics and obsolete technologies. Highly visible and easy pickings, the Medics are dwindling in number. As battlefield support becomes scarce it becomes increasingly obvious that modern warfare is desperate for a tactical overhaul. Fortunately, Meredith Clase, an electronics engineer-turned-soldier, might have just the thing. Sergeant Wens Lillenthal has been holding a grudge against Clase for almost eight years and he doesn't plan on dropping it soon. When Clase arrives in an experimental unit and tells him to get in or get off, he balks at putting his faith in her. But when she insists that he become the hero he plays to his men, Lillenthal is dragged along a path to fame he never wanted, and into a world he can't ever leave.

I was so surprised at how much the story drew me in, as I am not big on war books. This book has a very different view of the way the government treats war and is able to show you it from many different points of views. Though the main focus of the book is the relationship between two adults whom went to high school and thus dealt with each other in the most awkward time of life, trying to get through war together after being apart for many years. The love story is not the main focus of this book, which in most books it is, but it ends up being so intense in parts and sometimes to determine if there is even a love story in it. I would recommend this book to anyone whom loves scifi, or hell just wants to read a dam good book by an up and coming author!Product details

This is good book about a alternative universe that is still imaginable to our own. I liked the main characters and the how it centered on their story. Once I understood how differently the history of the world was, it made the story flow a lot faster and easier to read. It felt less like a war novel and more like a personal journey story.
I was completely taken in by this story and now can't wait to read the first one. I'm a lifelong sci-fi fan and a veteran. I loved the sci-fi elements and the obvious care taken by the author to incorporate soldiers' perspectives and a "real" military feel within an alternate history setting. I'm also looking forward to book number three!! This is definitely worth the price. Thanks, E. Stoops--keep the stories coming!!
Really enjoyed this; memorable characters, realistic dialogue and technology. I was ready for whiz-bang mental powers, laser weapons and so forth. What I got was an alternate version of current world problems that rang true throughout, and people with powers they really didn't understand. Very well done.
I enjoyed the story, the main characters were relatable, flawed, interesting, and engaging. The secondary and tertiary characters were interesting and I feel did a good job of supporting the leads and adding to the story. The story is interesting, engaging, well thought out, laid out, and well paced. I certainly hope to see more of the characters in the sequels. This book is very much worth the read. I also Highly recommend the sequels as well.
First off, if you loved Pocket in the Sea (the first book of Pretense of a Paranormal Present) then you will love this one. The main characters have changed (sort of) but there's still the same level of funny, weird and quirky on every page. Lillenthal is no less abrasive and amusing in this second installment, but now we get a bit of a look at why he is the way he is. Along with that we get to know Clase, someone we all might have a little too much in common with, minus a certain something special. They are surrounded by a large and wonderfully diverse crew of support characters that add whole new levels of entertainment and immersion to this story. The story itself is fun and engaging, with just the right dose of drama. I highly suggest you buy this book, you won't regret it!
